IELTS Listening — Common Questions
Is the Listening test the same for Academic and General Training?▼
Yes. The IELTS Listening test is identical for both Academic and General Training — the same four sections, the same format, and the same scoring. Only Reading and Writing differ between the two versions.
How many questions are in the IELTS Listening test?▼
There are 40 questions in total (10 per section). Each correct answer scores 1 mark. The raw score is converted to an IELTS band score.
What are common IELTS Listening question types?▼
Common types include form and note completion, multiple choice, matching, map/plan labelling, and sentence completion. Short-answer questions require exact words from the recording.
How do I improve my score on IELTS Listening form completion questions?▼
Read the form carefully before the audio starts to understand what type of information is needed (a name, a date, a number, an address). Listen for spelling of names and numbers — these are common errors. The answer is usually given in order, so if you miss one, leave it blank and move to the next question rather than losing focus on the audio.
What accents will I hear in the IELTS Listening test?▼
The IELTS Listening test uses a variety of native English accents — primarily British, Australian, Canadian, and American. It is important to practise with a range of accents so you are not caught off guard by a speaker's pronunciation on test day.
How much time do I get to read the questions before the IELTS Listening audio starts?▼
In the real IELTS test, you are given approximately 30–40 seconds before each section to read the questions. In the computer-based test, you can control when to start the audio. Use this time to underline key words in each question — such as names, numbers, and topic words — so you know exactly what to listen for.
What happens if I miss an answer in IELTS Listening?▼
If you miss an answer, do not go back — keep listening to avoid missing the next answers. Write your best guess and move on. At the end you will have time to review your answers before the test ends. Unlike many multiple-choice tests, there is no penalty for incorrect answers in IELTS, so always attempt every question.
