IELTS Academic Writing — Common Questions
What is IELTS Academic Writing Task 1?▼
In IELTS Academic Writing Task 1 you describe visual information — a graph, chart, table, or diagram — in at least 150 words. You have approximately 20 minutes and it is worth one third of your writing score.
What is IELTS Writing Task 2?▼
In IELTS Writing Task 2 you write a discursive essay responding to a point of view, argument, or problem in at least 250 words. You have approximately 40 minutes and it is worth two thirds of your writing score.
What band score do I need for IELTS Writing?▼
For Canadian Express Entry you need the equivalent of Band 6.0 per skill. Most UK and Australian universities require Band 6.0–7.0 for writing. Some programmes ask for Band 7.0 or higher.
How does the IELTS writing correction work?▼
After you submit your essay our system checks grammar, vocabulary range, sentence structure, word count, and paragraph organisation. You receive highlighted corrections, an estimated band score, and specific improvement tips — all in plain English.
What is a good Task 1 structure for IELTS Academic Writing?▼
A strong Task 1 response has four parts: an introduction that paraphrases the question, an overview of the two or three most significant trends, and one or two body paragraphs that describe the data with specific figures. You should not include personal opinions or unexplained data. Aim for at least 170 words to allow room for detail.
What are the four IELTS Writing band score criteria?▼
IELTS Writing is marked on Task Achievement (Task 1) or Task Response (Task 2), Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. Each criterion is worth 25% of your Writing band score. Improving any one of the four will raise your overall band.
How long should my IELTS Task 2 essay be?▼
The minimum is 250 words, but most Band 7+ essays are 280–320 words. Going significantly over 300 words can introduce more errors. Focus on quality — a clear position, well-developed arguments, and accurate grammar — rather than simply adding words.
Can I practise IELTS Writing on a phone or tablet?▼
Yes. Bandleep works on any device — desktop, tablet, or mobile. However, since IELTS is a timed typed test (or handwritten, depending on the format), practising on a computer keyboard is recommended to build the speed and accuracy you will need on test day.
