IELTS Speaking — Common Questions
What are the three parts of the IELTS Speaking test?▼
Part 1 is a short interview about familiar topics (4–5 minutes). Part 2 is a long turn where you speak about a topic on a cue card for 1–2 minutes after 1 minute of preparation. Part 3 is a two-way discussion on abstract ideas related to Part 2 (4–5 minutes).
How is IELTS Speaking scored?▼
IELTS Speaking is scored on four criteria: Fluency & Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range & Accuracy, and Pronunciation. Each criterion is scored 0–9 and the average gives your band score, rounded to the nearest 0.5.
What band do I need for university admission?▼
Most universities accept Band 6.0–7.0 in Speaking. Some postgraduate programmes and professional registration bodies require 7.0 or above. Practice regularly and focus on expanding your vocabulary and reducing hesitation.
How long is the IELTS Speaking test?▼
The IELTS Speaking test lasts between 11 and 14 minutes in total. Part 1 is 4–5 minutes, Part 2 gives you 1 minute of preparation followed by 1–2 minutes of speaking, and Part 3 is 4–5 minutes of discussion.
What topics come up in IELTS Speaking Part 1?▼
IELTS Speaking Part 1 asks about familiar everyday topics such as your hometown, work or studies, hobbies, food, travel, and daily routines. The examiner asks short questions and expects relatively brief, natural answers of two to four sentences. You should not memorise scripted answers as examiners are trained to detect them.
How can I improve my IELTS Speaking band score?▼
Focus on the four scoring criteria: (1) Fluency — reduce long pauses; use filler phrases like 'That's an interesting question' to buy thinking time. (2) Lexical Resource — use topic-specific vocabulary and synonyms instead of repeating simple words. (3) Grammar — use a mix of tenses, conditionals, and complex sentences. (4) Pronunciation — aim for clarity rather than a particular accent; stress the right syllables and chunk your speech naturally.
