CELPIP General Reading — Common Questions

What does CELPIP General Reading test?
CELPIP General Reading tests your ability to understand written English in everyday situations: emails, notices, schedules, news articles, and longer passages. There are four parts with a total of 38 questions in 55 minutes.
What question types appear in CELPIP General Reading?
CELPIP Reading includes multiple choice questions. Each question tests one of five reading skills: main idea, detail, inference, vocabulary in context, and writer's purpose.
How is CELPIP Reading scored?
CELPIP Reading is scored on the CLB scale from 1 to 12. Your score reflects how accurately and efficiently you can extract meaning from written texts at different levels of complexity.
What are the four parts of CELPIP General Reading?
Part 1 is Reading Correspondence (an email or letter with 11 questions in about 10 minutes). Part 2 is Reading to Apply a Diagram (a visual with text and 8 questions in about 8 minutes). Part 3 is Reading for Information (two short passages with 9 questions in about 11 minutes). Part 4 is Reading for Viewpoints (a longer opinionated passage with 10 questions in about 13 minutes). All questions are multiple choice with four options.
How can I improve my CELPIP Reading score?
Focus on reading the questions before the passage — this tells you exactly what information to look for. In CELPIP Reading, main idea questions are best answered after reading the whole text, while detail questions can be answered by scanning for keywords. Inference questions require you to draw conclusions not explicitly stated. Vocabulary in context questions ask about the meaning of a word as used in the passage, not its dictionary definition.
What CLB level in CELPIP Reading do I need for Express Entry?
Express Entry under the Federal Skilled Worker Programme requires a minimum CLB 7 in Reading. For CELPIP General Reading, CLB 7 corresponds to correctly answering approximately 25–28 of the 38 questions. Each CLB level above 7 earns additional CRS points — reaching CLB 9 in Reading earns the maximum Reading language points.
Is CELPIP Reading harder than IELTS Reading?
Both tests assess reading comprehension but use different formats. CELPIP uses exclusively multiple choice, while IELTS uses a wider range of question types. CELPIP uses everyday Canadian English texts, while IELTS Academic uses more formal academic passages. Whether one is harder depends on the individual — some test-takers find the single format of CELPIP easier to prepare for.
