CELPIP General Writing — Common Questions

What is CELPIP General Writing Task 1?
In CELPIP General Writing Task 1 you write an email of 150–200 words in approximately 27 minutes. The task gives you a scenario and specifies the recipient and purpose — for example, making a complaint, asking for information, or inviting someone.
What is CELPIP General Writing Task 2?
In CELPIP General Writing Task 2 you respond to a survey of 150–200 words in approximately 26 minutes. You typically express and justify an opinion, evaluate options, or describe a situation.
What CLB level is required for Canadian permanent residency?
Most Express Entry programmes require a minimum of CLB 7 in all four skills. Higher scores earn more CRS points. Some Provincial Nominee Programmes accept CLB 4–6.
How does the CELPIP writing correction work?
After you submit your response our system checks grammar, vocabulary range, word count, sentence structure, and task completion. You receive highlighted corrections, a CLB level estimate, and specific tips to improve your score.
What are the scoring criteria for CELPIP Writing?
CELPIP Writing is scored on three criteria for each task: Task Fulfillment (did you cover all the required points and communicate the message clearly?), Vocabulary (range, precision, and appropriate word choice), and Sentence Structure (grammar accuracy, sentence variety, and punctuation). Each criterion is rated on the CLB scale and the average gives your Writing CLB level.
How should I format a CELPIP Task 1 email?
Include a subject line, greeting, body, and closing. Open with a clear statement of purpose (e.g., 'I am writing to report a problem with my recent order'). Address all the bullet points in the task, using one short paragraph per point. Close with a specific request or next step. Aim for 160–180 words — close to the upper limit signals confidence but leaves no room for off-topic content.
What is the difference between CLB 7 and CLB 9 in CELPIP Writing?
A CLB 7 writer communicates the main message clearly but may use repetitive vocabulary, simple sentence structures, and have occasional grammar errors. A CLB 9 writer uses varied and precise vocabulary, a range of sentence structures with minimal errors, and demonstrates strong task fulfilment with well-organised ideas. Moving from CLB 7 to CLB 9 in Writing earns an additional 6–10 CRS points under the Express Entry formula.
