CELPIP Speaking — Common Questions
What is the CELPIP Speaking test like?▼
CELPIP Speaking has 8 tasks covering a range of everyday situations: giving advice, talking about a personal experience, making an argument, and more. Each task gives you 30 seconds to prepare and 60–90 seconds to respond.
How is CELPIP Speaking scored?▼
CELPIP Speaking is scored on four criteria: Content, Coherence, Vocabulary, and Listenability. Each is rated on the CLB scale (3–12) and the average gives your overall CLB level.
What CLB level do I need for Canadian permanent residency?▼
Most Express Entry programmes through Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) require CLB 7 in all four skills. A higher CLB score earns more CRS points, improving your chances of an Invitation to Apply.
What are the 8 CELPIP Speaking tasks?▼
The 8 CELPIP Speaking tasks are: (1) Giving Advice, (2) Talking About a Personal Experience, (3) Describing a Scene, (4) Making Predictions, (5) Comparing and Persuading, (6) Dealing with a Difficult Situation, (7) Expressing Opinions, and (8) Describing an Unusual Situation. Each task simulates a realistic Canadian life scenario and requires 60–90 seconds of spoken response.
What does 'Listenability' mean in CELPIP Speaking?▼
Listenability in CELPIP Speaking refers to how easy your speech is to understand from a listener's perspective. It encompasses pronunciation clarity, natural rhythm and pacing, appropriate volume, and the absence of distracting hesitations or repetitions. Unlike IELTS, CELPIP assesses Listenability as a single criterion rather than separating Fluency and Pronunciation.
How can I improve my CELPIP Speaking score from CLB 7 to CLB 9?▼
To move from CLB 7 to CLB 9: (1) Content — answer the task directly and completely, adding specific examples or reasons rather than vague statements; (2) Coherence — use clear connectors ('First... then... finally', 'On the other hand') to organise your ideas; (3) Vocabulary — replace common words with more precise or varied synonyms; (4) Listenability — reduce filler sounds ('um', 'uh'), speak at a steady pace, and stress important words naturally. Recording yourself and listening back is one of the most effective ways to identify and fix these issues.
Is CELPIP Speaking easier than IELTS Speaking?▼
Neither is objectively easier. CELPIP Speaking is computer-based — you record your response into a microphone and it is scored later — while IELTS Speaking involves a live conversation with a human examiner. Some test-takers find the CELPIP format less stressful because there is no social pressure from a live interview. Others find it harder to maintain natural, conversational speech when speaking to a computer.
