What Task 1 Actually Rewards

- Overview (2 sentences): state the two or three most significant, general trends — no numbers needed here.

Why the Overview Is the Most Underrated Skill
Many candidates skip the overview or bury it inside their conclusion — this is one of the most common ways to cap a Task Achievement score at Band 5 or 6, even when the language is strong. The overview must appear early (usually right after the introduction) and must be free of specific numbers.
Think of the overview as answering: 'If I could only say three sentences about this chart, what would matter most?' For a line graph, that might be which category rose and which fell overall. For a bar chart, it might be which category was consistently highest and which was lowest. For a table, it might be which row or column showed the most variation.
A useful test: if you removed all your body paragraphs and kept only the overview, could a reader still get the main story of the chart? If yes, your overview is doing its job.

For line graphs and bar charts showing change over time, you need a working vocabulary of movement verbs, and you need to vary sentence structure so you're not repeating 'increased' in every line. Precision matters more than fancy words — 'rose sharply' is better than a vague 'changed a lot'.
For tables and pie charts with no time element, focus on comparison and proportion language rather than trend verbs. Grouping similar data together (rather than going row by row) shows organisational skill, which examiners reward under Coherence and Cohesion.
- Movement verbs: rose, increased, climbed, grew, surged, declined, fell, dropped, dipped, fluctuated, levelled off, remained stable/constant/steady
- Degree adverbs: sharply, dramatically, steadily, gradually, slightly, marginally, considerably
- Comparison structures: X was more than twice as high as Y; X accounted for nearly a third of the total; the gap between X and Y narrowed/widened; X and Y were broadly similar

Describing Processes and Diagrams
Process diagrams (natural cycles like the water cycle, or manufacturing steps) don't need an overview built on trends — instead, your overview should state how many stages there are and where the process starts and ends. This replaces the numeric overview used for charts.
Structure the body paragraphs by stage, using sequencing language to guide the reader, and prefer passive voice when the diagram doesn't specify who performs an action — which is common in manufacturing or cyclical processes.
Keep each stage description concise. A common error is writing a full sentence per arrow in the diagram; instead, group two or three connected steps into a single sentence when it's logical to do so.
- Sequencing language: first, initially, following this, subsequently, after that, once X has occurred, at the final stage, the cycle then repeats
- Passive voice examples: the raw material is heated to 200°C; the water is then filtered before being transported to storage tanks

Describing Maps
Map tasks show a location at two points in time (or a proposed future change) and ask you to describe the differences. The overview here should name the two or three most obvious changes — new buildings, removed features, expanded roads — without listing every detail.
Organise body paragraphs by area of the map (north, south, town centre) rather than jumping randomly between features, and rely on location and change-of-state vocabulary rather than trend verbs.
Since maps are less predictable than charts, spend an extra minute during planning identifying an orientation point (a landmark that appears in both maps) and describing the layout relative to it — this makes your answer easier to follow.

Common Mistakes That Cap Your Score
Certain errors appear so consistently across candidates that avoiding them alone can move you up a band. Review this list before every practice attempt until the habits become automatic.
- Writing an overview with specific numbers instead of general patterns — the overview should be numbers-free.
- Describing every data point in order rather than grouping related information logically.
- Giving a personal opinion on the data (Task 1 is descriptive, not argumentative — save opinions for Task 2).
- Writing under 150 words, which triggers an automatic penalty regardless of quality.
- Copying phrases directly from the question prompt instead of paraphrasing them.
- Spending more than 20 minutes on Task 1, leaving too little time for the more heavily weighted Task 2.
A Worked Mini-Example
Imagine a bar chart comparing electricity consumption across four countries in 2000 and 2020. A strong response might open: 'The chart compares how much electricity four countries used in 2000 and 2020.' The overview would follow: 'Overall, electricity consumption rose in all four countries, though Country A used considerably more than the others throughout the period.'
The first body paragraph could then group the two highest-consuming countries, comparing their figures and the size of their increase, while the second body paragraph covers the two lower-consuming countries in the same way. Notice that no paragraph simply lists all four countries in the original order — the data has been reorganised to tell a clearer story.
